Mbongiseni Thwala on learning about Sustainability

Mbongiseni Thwala, Solid Green’s recently appointed office assistant, is finding great value in learning about the green building and sustainability sector; and looks forward to having a positive impact on the world around him in the future.

I was born in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, but grew up in Soweto, Gauteng. After attending Naledi High School, I studied a technical course in engineering and related design at Ehlanzeni TVET College, obtaining a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 in 2017.

l became interested in engineering in high school when we attended one of the Science Week Expo’s at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus. l have always been curious about machines and how they function, and this interest inspired me to study engineering. The highlight of my studies was studying engineering graphic design as l started to understand how a product can be developed from a design drawing to an actual product. My current tasks as office assistant include screen incoming calls, collecting office supplies and helping with the general office routine; but my future plan is to obtain a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resource Management.

l was given the opportunity to join Solid Green through the Harambee bridging programme, which connects young people looking for their first jobs with employers looking for entry-level staff. Coming into the office, you get a warm welcome from colours that complement the office design and plants that give a natural feel. At work I feel l have a purpose in adding value to the growth of the company.

On Monday mornings, we have a culture of eating breakfast together while attending, and talking about, a weekly training session. We also go to gym together in the mornings and participate in different sporting activities to help keep the body and mind healthy. The culture of celebrating achievements and birthdays is a unique idea and it’s always done differently to make it fun and memorable.

The team feeds off each other’s positive energy and the excellent work ethic contributes to the atmosphere of professional teamwork. As a new member of the team, l am aware that I am also new to the sustainable industry that is growing right now in Africa. The experience of being part of Solid Green has made me more aware of the other ways in which l can help make the world a greener place. Working here has helped to show me ways in which l can play a role in keeping the environment suitable and sustainable for a better tomorrow.
