Making a Difference: Our Day with Rise Against Hunger

On Saturday 8th June, the Solid Green team had the privilege of participating in a volunteering event with Rise Against Hunger. Here, Aadil Fayzoo shares our experience.

Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organisation dedicated to ending hunger by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable populations. Their mission is to eradicate hunger in our lifetime by mobilising resources and creating global commitment. The event was a testament to the power of community involvement and collaboration. Our team joined forces with other local volunteers, including families, community groups, and other companies, all united by one common goal: to combat hunger and make a positive impact.

At the event, we experienced the efficiency and impact of a well-organised production line system firsthand. The process began with the assembly of raw ingredients, including rice, soy and vegetables, with all the essential vitamins and minerals needed for kids to grow. These ingredients were carefully measured and combined to create a nutritious meal formula that meets the dietary needs of those facing food insecurity.

Here’s a breakdown of the production process:

Preparation of Ingredients:

  • Volunteers gathered around tables where bulk ingredients were stored. Each ingredient station had a specific volunteer responsible for measuring and dispensing the correct amounts into pre-set bags.

Filling and Weighing:

  • Once the ingredients were combined in the bags, they were passed down the line to the next group of volunteers, who ensured each bag was filled to the correct weight. Precision is key to ensuring each meal bag provides the necessary nutrients.

Sealing the Bags:

  • The filled bags were then sealed tightly to preserve the contents. This step was critical for maintaining the freshness and safety of the meals during transportation and storage.

Packaging:

  • After sealing, the bags were packed into boxes. Each box was carefully labelled and documented, ensuring traceability and accountability for every meal packaged.

Our team played a vital role in this process, contributing to the packaging of 3240 meals!

The energy in the room was incredible as volunteers worked in unison, motivated by the knowledge that their efforts would provide essential nourishment to those in need. The packaged meals were destined for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, where they would support young children’s health and development. These centres play a crucial role in offering not only education but also a safe and nurturing environment for children.

Community involvement was a cornerstone of this event. We were inspired by the diverse group of volunteers who came together, each bringing their unique skills and enthusiasm. This collective effort underscored the importance of working together to address critical issues like hunger. Participating in this event was an incredibly rewarding experience for our team. It served as a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause. We are proud to support the mission of Rise Against Hunger and look forward to more opportunities to contribute to such meaningful initiatives in the future.
