The Solid Green Workplace Resilience Programme started as a quiet internal experiment – an attempt to better support our team in the face of mounting complexity, emotional strain, and long-term sustainability work.

But what began as an inward-facing commitment has grown into something more. It’s become a strategic capability. A mindset. And increasingly, a resource we’re using to support others who are navigating the same challenges in their own teams and organisations.

In this final article of the series on workplace resilience, we reflect on how what we’ve learned internally is beginning to shape how we show up externally – as facilitators, collaborators, and thought partners in building resilience beyond our own walls.

Photo by Mark McGregor on Unsplash

Why This Work Resonates with Others

We’re not alone in recognising the cost of burnout in the sustainability space.

Clients have shared stories of staff fatigue, leadership stress, strained collaboration, and a general sense that the pace of delivery is outstripping the capacity for reflection and care. Project timelines don’t often allow for pause. Teams are expected to absorb shock after shock – whether it’s climate anxiety, policy uncertainty, or the emotional weight of justice-driven work.

In many ways, the conversations we were having inside Solid Green were a mirror of what was happening across the sector.

As a result, our programme has evolved into something others can learn from, adapt, and make their own.

How We’re Supporting Others

We’ve begun using our framework, tools, and facilitation approach in new ways:

Workshops and team sessions for clients seeking to embed resilience into workplace culture

Resilience check-ins during long-term consulting engagements

Resource sharing—including our Resilience Toolkit and Wellness at Work strategies

Leadership coaching for sustainability professionals carrying the emotional weight of change

Sometimes it’s formal. Sometimes it’s a gentle nudge or a shared story. But in all cases, we’re seeing a hunger for this work – not just in theory, but in practice.

Photo by Christina Morillo on Pexels

From Theory to Application: Resilience in Project Culture

It’s not only internal teams that benefit. Many of our clients are beginning to explore:

how design and development teams relate to each other across project lifecycles

how deadlines and deliverables intersect with human well-being

how to build trust, especially across interdisciplinary or high-stakes collaborations

By bringing in resilience as a design principle – not just an HR conversation – we’re helping teams become more aware, more reflective, and ultimately more effective.

Building a Culture of Permission

One of the most powerful things we’ve learned is that change often starts with permission.
Permission to pause. Permission to check in. Permission to ask, “Is this sustainable – for our people, not just our outputs?”

Through our work, we’re creating cultures where it becomes acceptable – and even expected – to care. To rest. To redesign timelines in ways that preserve energy and clarity. To build not just buildings or plans, but teams that are strong enough to weather the work.

Looking Ahead

The resilience programme isn’t a side project anymore – it’s a core part of how we lead, work, and support others. And we’re excited about what’s next.

Solid Green is committed to leading from within and partnering outward, whether it’s:

helping other sustainability firms build their own internal programmes

supporting cross-disciplinary teams navigating high-stress design environments

or embedding resilience language into project briefs and leadership development

Because workplace resilience isn’t separate from performance. It’s what makes it sustainable.

If you’re exploring how to bring more resilience into your team, your culture, or your collaborations – reach out. Whether you’re looking to start a conversation, pilot a new idea, or co-create something meaningful, we’d love to connect.

Adrie Fourie, Head of the Sustainable Cities & Research Department at Solid Green, shares how Solid Green is shaping a healthier, high-performing workplace

Building a resilient team isn’t just about being supportive – it’s about being strategic.

At Solid Green, we knew from the start that our Workplace Resilience Programme needed to be more than a set of feel-good activities. It had to be embedded, evolving, and evidence-informed. That’s why we began with the question: What does a truly integrated approach to workplace resilience look like?

An Integrated Architecture

We view resilience not as a standalone topic, but as part of a living system. The programme is designed to work in concert with our existing strengths – technical expertise, wellness initiatives, and leadership development – creating a dynamic model for what we call a Resilient & Regenerative Solid Green.

Solid Green’s resilience programme sits alongside two other anchors:

Wellness at Work, which includes workplace health and well-being practices.

Technical Skill & Proficiency, ensuring our delivery excellence remains high.

Together, these pillars form the ecosystem that supports our people, our culture and ultimately, our clients.

A Framework with Three Tiers

Our resilience strategy is delivered at three interconnected levels:

1. Resilience Assessments

Every team member is invited to complete a private, 50-question assessment measuring their personal resilience profile. It’s not a test – it’s a reflection tool that surfaces both strengths and support needs.

2. Insights & Adaptation

The results inform both individual learning and team-wide interventions, helping us co-design support based on real-world patterns and needs.

3. Programme Delivery

Through workshops, self-guided tools, optional coaching, and ongoing content, we embed resilience thinking into how we lead, collaborate, and show up – both for each other and for the work.

How Individual Resilience Shows Up in the Organisation

One of the most compelling insights we’ve gained is that individual resilience doesn’t stay individual – it scales. Patterns in personal resilience can manifest in team culture, leadership effectiveness, and ultimately business performance.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

A team with strong emotional regulation and focus translates into better client interactions and delivery quality.

A lack of rest and recovery habits can surface as reduced innovation, presenteeism, or team disengagement.

Unaddressed overload or avoidance may quietly disrupt collaboration and resilience during periods of change.

This understanding helps us not only care for our people but also shape a healthier, more adaptive organisation.

Why It Works

Our approach isn’t flashy – it’s intentional. What makes the Solid Green Workplace Resilience Programme effective is that it is:

Embedded within daily rhythms, not siloed.

Informed by data, not guesswork.

Co-created, not imposed.

Flexible, but rooted in purpose.

In other words, we designed a system that grows with us.

Looking Ahead

Every new team member who joins Solid Green is invited to complete the assessment, ensuring we remain responsive to shifting dynamics and emerging needs. Resilience is not a fixed state – it’s a practice we commit to daily, together.

In the next article, we’ll share Lessons in Real Time – honest reflections on what’s working, what we’ve had to rethink, and how we’re applying what we learn inside our own walls to support the industry beyond them.

Our memorable moments

At the heart of our success are our relationships – with clients, colleagues, suppliers, and our team. These connections form the foundation of our business. So it came as a huge shock when, in February, we were informed of the tragic loss of a highly regarded member of the Solid Green family, Mthokozisi ‘Giant’ Nxumalo, a man like no other. Giant’s passing has left a deep sadness for those of us who knew him, and it is taking time to adjust to the loss of one of our own.

In recent months, our workload has meant expanding our team, and we have welcomed the following new talent:

Amy Symington, Junior Green Building Consultant (January 2024)

Thobeka Zuma, EDGE Project Manager (April 2024)

Melissa Laubscher, Accountant (March 2024)

Janki Malefane, Modelling Technician (May 2024)

Two of our team members directed the development of categories under the Green Star New Build V2 rating tool. Piloted at the end of 2023, the tool expands the minimum requirements that need to be met by project teams seeking this certification. Annelidé Sherratt, Head of Solid Green’s Green Building Certifications department, directed the Healthy category while Adrie Fourie, Head of Solid Green’s Sustainable Cities & Research department, directed the Places category.

During this year, we continued to transform our office in Parkhurst, a journey that has allowed us to explore our commitment to sustainability and the built environment. We also commissioned a stunning new mural on the street-facing side of our building, which serves as a bold statement of who we are and what we stand for.

It started with a laugh. How could it not, when your MC for the entire event is the humorous John Vlismas? What followed was three whirlwind days of learning, sharing, conversing, concentrating—and yes, occasionally yawning. Let’s face it: conventions are a break from the routine of everyday work life. As John quipped (paraphrased), “When else during your regular day do you insist on indulging in a delicate pastry or croissant at every refreshment break?”

But enough about the snacks. Let’s dive into the real substance of the 2024 Green Building Convention.

John Vlismas, taken by Annelide Sherratt

Day 1: A Dynamic Start

The first day of the 17th Green Building Convention kicked off with energy and warmth. From the heartfelt welcome by the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) to the laughter-filled moments led by our MC, it set the tone for an unforgettable event.

Chilufya Lombe during his presentation, taken by GBCSA

One of the standout moments of the day was Chilufya Lombe’s engaging presentation on achieving Net Zero in existing buildings—a critical topic for advancing sustainability in our sector. Chilu emphasised the importance of addressing the “energy efficiency gap” in existing buildings, showcasing the need for extreme energy efficiency measures alongside renewable energy integration. By setting clear, process-driven targets and utilising data-driven optimisation strategies, the presentation highlighted how operational efficiency and innovative technologies can bridge the gap between design intent and real-world performance.

The day ended on a high note with a creative upcycling fashion show, where waste was transformed into wearable art. It wasn’t just an exercise in creativity but a reminder of the potential that lies in reimagining waste. My own entry, a chunky silver rose necklace crafted from cut-up egg cartons and a base of plastic bottle tops, was a fun and tangible way to showcase how everyday materials can find new life in unexpected forms.

The trashion show runway, taken by GBCSA

The sense of community was palpable, as friends and colleagues who share a commitment to sustainability came together once again to collaborate, innovate, and inspire.

Day 2: Collaboration is Key

Day 2 of the Green Building Convention continued to build momentum. Changing gears for a moment from MC to speaker, John Vlismas opened with a thought-provoking analogy (paraphrased):

To beat the house (aka climate change), we need to change the game—from player-vs-player to a collaborative, multiplayer strategy.

Dr. Sechaba Maape reminded us of the importance of indigenous knowledge, suggesting the use of AI to understand the environmental impact of our built environment. Meanwhile, Michael Jordaan delivered a powerful message, “Ideas are great, execution is better, but sustainability is key to longevity.”

Marloes speaking on the value of AP’s, taken by Jennifer Dean

Marloes Reinink, our director, emphasised the value of Accredited Professionals at the project team table. Whether for new builds or existing buildings, their role is crucial in steering projects toward sustainable outcomes.

Annelide Sherratt, our Head of Certifications, contributed to an insightful session with V2 category directors André Harms, Francois Retief and Dash Coville, sharing strategies to navigate the updated certification tool – fondly dubbed “Taming the V2 Beast.”

Annelide speaking on “Taming the V2 beast”, taken by Ranjita Pillai

The day concluded in spectacular fashion at the gala dinner, themed “Beautiful Creatures.” Our team turned heads with our “Birds of Paradise” ensemble. A highlight was Marloes accepting the Net Zero Waste award for the Liberty Two Degrees Retail Portfolio project, a collaborative achievement with Francois Retief from Sow and Reap. Truly a shining example of the collaborative strategy John Vlismas championed earlier in the day.

Solid Green in “Birds of Paradise” unison, taken by Mark Sherratt

Day 3: Insights and Inspiration

The morning walk between our accommodation and the convention was filled with fresh air and a crisp wind which helped clear the cobwebs of the previous night’s gala dinner for the final day of the convention. The first session was a break away, and included my own presentation, titled “There’s Gold Here. Don’t Waste It!” Using the Balwin Properties Head Quarters building as a case study, the immense potential in responsibly managing construction waste was showcased.

Jennifer Dean speaking on Balwin Net Zero Waste, taken by Ranjita Pillai

Later, a captivating panel discussion, “Voices of Tomorrow: Young Leaders Shaping Our Sustainable Future,” hosted by John Vlismas, spotlighted inspiring youth leaders. Environmental activist Zoe Prinsloo, Sundial Movement co-founder Otsile Nkadimeng, and Eco-Soap Bank director Sharon Rapetswa shared their bold visions for a sustainable future.

Andre de Ruyter delivered a sobering yet motivating talk on decarbonisation and the Just Energy Transition (JET), highlighting the paradox of sunshine-rich regions with low renewable energy adoption. He challenged us to think beyond charity from developed nations and instead innovate for fairness and impact.

GBCSA CEO Lisa Reynolds brought the convention to a close with a rousing call to action, leaving us energised and ready to take on new sustainability challenges.

Looking Ahead

Just like the Cape South-Easter keeps things fresh, the 2024 Green Building Convention refreshed our minds and refocused our efforts. We learned from each other, shared our successes and lessons, and celebrated those who have excelled.

We also saluted the everyday heroes – the Zero Heroes – who show up daily with their sustainability caps on, driving change in the built environment.

I’m proud to be part of that team as the company’s Accountant, contributing over 11 years of experience in finance to support our mission. My role involves ensuring financial stability and transparency while helping Solid Green achieve sustainable growth.

As the Accountant at Solid Green, I work closely with the management team to optimise financial operations and drive our sustainability initiatives. My background in finance allows me to navigate the challenges of balancing financial goals with the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

A Career Shaped by Solid Green

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the idea of making systems work better. That passion for optimisation and numbers naturally led me to a career in finance, where I could apply those skills to make a meaningful impact.

My path to accounting was driven by a love for problem-solving and creating efficient systems. I studied finance at the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB), which provided the foundation for my career. Currently, I’m pursuing a Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualification to enhance my expertise in management accounting.

My experience at Solid Green has been transformative. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how finance intersects with sustainability and have been inspired by the company’s unwavering commitment to green building practices. This experience has encouraged me to incorporate sustainability into my accounting and financial strategies.

Thriving in a Proactive Environment

Being part of a proactive team like Solid Green is truly inspiring. For me, it’s about more than just staying ahead of trends—it’s about working together to address challenges before they arise. Everyone here is focused on driving sustainable change, and I’m proud to contribute to a team that shares such a forward-thinking and solutions-oriented mindset.

As a young professional in the field of sustainability, I’m passionate about finding ways to balance financial growth with environmental responsibility. It’s important to me that finance supports green initiatives and contributes to long-term, sustainable solutions. I firmly believe that innovation, paired with a strong financial foundation, can create a better future for everyone.

As I continue my journey, I’m excited to contribute to Solid Green’s mission of promoting sustainable development. For me, this isn’t just a job—it’s a chance to make a lasting impact and help pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

Transitioning to Solid Green has been both a great learning curve for me and an enjoyable experience. I came into a team of people that already possesses a wealth of experience in sustainability, which they were willing to share with me. It has been a journey of learnings. A large part of my role is timeline driven for project deliverables. I am also client-facing and engage with external stakeholders.

I studied a B.Sc. Property Development at the University of KwaZulu Natal, and then completed an Honours in Quantity Surveying at the same institution. I have also obtained the IFC Edge Expert Certificate.

As a young person, I am excited to be part of the growing field of sustainability. I am particularly excited to start my sustainability career at a consulting firm like Solid Green that has a lot of skin in the game. I think what is important to me now is to learn as much as I can to propel my career forward.

My experience at Solid Green is definitely influencing my direction. Prior to working here, I had no idea that green building and sustainability extended to all the areas that I have been exposed to in recent months. I feel that my time at Solid Green is broadening my understanding of green building and sustainability, helping to shape my career direction, and fuelling my eagerness to continue learning and contributing to the industry.

Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organisation dedicated to ending hunger by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable populations. Their mission is to eradicate hunger in our lifetime by mobilising resources and creating global commitment. The event was a testament to the power of community involvement and collaboration. Our team joined forces with other local volunteers, including families, community groups, and other companies, all united by one common goal: to combat hunger and make a positive impact.

At the event, we experienced the efficiency and impact of a well-organised production line system firsthand. The process began with the assembly of raw ingredients, including rice, soy and vegetables, with all the essential vitamins and minerals needed for kids to grow. These ingredients were carefully measured and combined to create a nutritious meal formula that meets the dietary needs of those facing food insecurity.

Here’s a breakdown of the production process:

Preparation of Ingredients:

Volunteers gathered around tables where bulk ingredients were stored. Each ingredient station had a specific volunteer responsible for measuring and dispensing the correct amounts into pre-set bags.

Filling and Weighing:

Once the ingredients were combined in the bags, they were passed down the line to the next group of volunteers, who ensured each bag was filled to the correct weight. Precision is key to ensuring each meal bag provides the necessary nutrients.

Sealing the Bags:

The filled bags were then sealed tightly to preserve the contents. This step was critical for maintaining the freshness and safety of the meals during transportation and storage.

Packaging:

After sealing, the bags were packed into boxes. Each box was carefully labelled and documented, ensuring traceability and accountability for every meal packaged.

Our team played a vital role in this process, contributing to the packaging of 3240 meals!

The energy in the room was incredible as volunteers worked in unison, motivated by the knowledge that their efforts would provide essential nourishment to those in need. The packaged meals were destined for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, where they would support young children’s health and development. These centres play a crucial role in offering not only education but also a safe and nurturing environment for children.

Community involvement was a cornerstone of this event. We were inspired by the diverse group of volunteers who came together, each bringing their unique skills and enthusiasm. This collective effort underscored the importance of working together to address critical issues like hunger. Participating in this event was an incredibly rewarding experience for our team. It served as a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause. We are proud to support the mission of Rise Against Hunger and look forward to more opportunities to contribute to such meaningful initiatives in the future.

Mthokozisi ‘Giant’ Nxumalo – ‘a man like no other’ – joined us in August 2016. He was one of four out of 25 staff members who shared our journey as we moved offices from Rosebank to Parkhurst. Below we share an excerpt from the speech given by our director, Chilu Lombe, at Giant’s funeral on 25 February, and the final poem that Giant wrote during his time here with us.

There are many stories as to where the name Giant came from. Our generally agreed theory was that it was because he was a self-styled Giant of the game of chess. He joined Solid Green as a modelling technician, responsible for drawing models used for the various types of energy modelling we do. By the end he was heavily involved in doing various modelling for Green Star and Sans10400 XA.

To date, we have only had one event at the home of one of the members of the Solid Green family, and it was at Giant’s house. Last year, he invited everyone at Solid Green to celebrate Heritage Day at his house in Soweto. His excitement at being able to share his home with his colleagues, and educate them in general about life in Soweto and the history of the area, will forever be a lasting memory in all our hearts.

His pride at having the best kept garden in his neighbourhood and an energy efficient home spoke to how he lived, taking on so many of the values we hold dear at Solid Green. He had experienced some health issues in the last year but, on that Heritage Day, he was more like his old self than he had been in a long time.

His passing has left a significant sadness within our work family. For years we have had nothing but celebration and joyous occasions. Dealing with this tragedy is something very new for us and it will take some time to adjust to the loss of one of our own. The messages and tributes from his family, church and general community showed just how many lives he touched and the extent of his involvement in everything in which he took part.

A poem by Giant:

Some expectations are too hard to be fulfilled and met as at when deal. You all expect to hear about my birth, growth, school, tertiary etc. Take one thing home today that is:
I strived to be a son in a family of many sons. I strived to excel at school & tertiary amongst other students. I strived to make it in world of business by stretching my knowledge through a pen and paper. I put mansion and established foundations through my technical architectural knowledge. I strived to be a good neighbour amongst good neighbours. I father my beautiful daughter Thando through the love of my life, Ntokozo. My name is Mthokozisi Vezubuhle Nxumalo. I lived my life as a giant in all that I did because I strived to be seen in a blurry world. As I fare all thee well, my sunset has come but remember me through the journey that we once took together. I am Giant
