For months we carry the weight of productivity, contribution and ambition, but December offers an invitation to pause and set aside some time to shift the focus from work to rest, vacation, travel and time with friends and family.

In our field, we speak often about sustainability in terms of buildings, systems and cities. Something that is just as essential is the sustainability of the people behind that work; their health, balance, and need to rest.

This is the human face of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. These goals remind us that “decent work” includes the right to rest, and that well-being is not separate from how we live and work, but woven into it.

Stepping Back from Productivity

Stepping back does not mean disengaging from purpose. It means loosening the relentless pace that often defines our professional identities. Many of us continue working long after the workday ends, replaying conversations, anticipating future pressures, mentally building the scaffolding of future tasks. The festive season is an opportunity to focus on something different, knowing that there are no emails building in your inbox.

In the same way that buildings cannot perform indefinitely without maintenance, human beings cannot sustain impact without renewal. This is the heart of SDG 3; a reminder that health includes psychological rest, emotional clarity and mental quiet.

Adaptive Reuse and the SDGs: Human Sustainability

Adaptive reuse — the practice of giving old buildings new life — parallels the internal work we do during periods of rest. Just as cities honour their histories while adapting to present needs, we revisit our own histories during quieter seasons. We reflect on who we have been and who we are becoming.

If we look at ourselves through a lens of adaptive reuse, linking it to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, because restoring ourselves, mind, body and identity — is essential to long-term wellness.

It also speaks to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, because decent work must honour the human need for pausing, re-evaluating and restoring. Just as buildings cannot serve their purpose without maintenance, people cannot thrive in work environments that do not allow for recharging.

Building Sustainability through Self-Restoration

Our industry often emphasises environmental sustainability, energy systems, and the resilience of buildings or districts. But the sustainability of the professionals behind this work — the emotional, mental and relational resilience we each carry — is fundamental.

This is where SDG 8 becomes profoundly personal. Decent work is not only about fair wages or safe conditions; it is also about healthy boundaries, psychological safety, and time for rest. It affirms the right to disconnect and a sustainable practice of restoration, without guilt or fear of looming deadlines.

As we close off the year, Solid Green continues to prioritise systems that foster resilience and a work-life balance that ensures and upholds high quality work and continued impact in sustainability.
